Loran Scholarship Application
Applications for the Loran Scholarship are now open for undergraduate programs at the University of Calgary by the Loran Scholarship Foundation from students who meet the necessary qualifications. It is an all-inclusive scholarship that is fully sponsored.
About Loran Scholarship
The Loran Award supports promising young Canadians who demonstrate character strength and a commitment to service in their communities, challenging them to fully realize their leadership potential. Annually available to an undergraduate students entering their first year in any faculty.
Renewable in the second, third, and fourth years at the University of Calgary, provided recipients achieve a minimum GPA of 3.30 over a minimum of 30.00 units in the previous fall and winter terms.
The recipients must live in university residence for at least two years and continue to demonstrate evidence of character, leadership, and service as determined by the Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation.
Valued at up to $100,000, the Loran Award includes:
- Study at one of 25 partner universities with an annual $10,000 living stipend and matching tuition waiver
- $10,000 in funding for three summer internships working in an enterprise, public policy, and community development
- The pairing of scholars with mentors who challenge them and introduce them to their new communities
- An orientation expedition through Algonquin Park
- Annual retreats and scholar gatherings
- The opportunity to join an extensive community of individuals working toward a better country and world
Loran Scholarship Criteria
The selection of a Loran Scholar is very unique in its emphasis on a young person’s character. Integrity, courage, grit, and personal autonomy, we believe, are better indicators of overall potential than traditional academic measures.
They use the most comprehensive scholarship selection process in Canada to discover these characteristics. The Loran Scholarship Application, which is available at 25 partner universities, is valued at $100,000 over four years and includes mentorship, funding for summer internships, and participation in an extensive network of past and present scholars.
They are offering up to 36 Loran Awards this year. In addition, we will award up to 118 finalists and provincial & territorial awards ($5,000 or $2,000 each) to deserving candidates.
Eligibility for Loran Scholarship
This Scholarship award is open to Canadian students who:
- Are in their final year of uninterrupted full-time studies in high school;
- Present a minimum cumulative average of 85%;
- Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status;
- Are at least 16 years of age by September 1st of the following year.
- Students who graduated this year and are currently taking a gap year are also eligible to apply.

For High School Students
- You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- A minimum cumulative average of 85% is required.
- You must be in your final year of uninterrupted full-time studies in high school.
- You must be at least 16 years of age.
- Students who graduated this year and are currently taking a gap year are also eligible to apply.
For CEGEP Students
- You must have a minimum R score of 29.
- You must be a permanent resident or citizen of Canadian.
- You must be at least 16 years of age.
- You must be in your final year of uninterrupted full-time studies in Cegep. If you are planning to attend university outside of Québec after only one year of Cegep, you can apply in your first year of Cegep.
- Students who graduated this year and are currently taking a gap year are also eligible to apply.
How to Apply for The Loran Scholarship?

- Read the instructions on the application form before filling out anything.
- Fill out your personal information, educational information, and activity record.
- List 5 tasks you have completed that help them know who you are.
- Fill out the community service section (if applicable).
- Write short essays on the topics given to you.
- Attach all the required documents including your transcripts or academic records, reference letters, sponsorship confirmation, etc.
- Review the information you entered and complete your application. You will be notified once they receive your application.
- Shortlisted candidates will be informed of their interview date. The interview will be done online and candidates get to meet the local leaders.
- Outstanding semi-finalists are invited for the national interviews.

Loran Scholarship Deadline
The deadline for the Loran scholarship Application for 2023-2024 is on October 11, 2023, before 8:00PM (Eastern Time). For SEMI-FINAL INTERVIEWS: From Mid-November to Mid-December, 2023. NATIONAL SELECTIONS INTERVIEWS: February 22-25, 2024. Transcripts must be submitted by high school students, while CEGEP students must submit school academic records and report cards.
